Countywide / Sheriff · Madison County

Brett Jones

Says the criminal justice system shows “racism.” Won't commit to helping enforce immigration law.

Democrat · Opponent: Sheriff Kevin Turner (R)

  • Calls the system he wants to run racist

In a September 2026 interview, said racial differences in bond amounts in Madison County have “only one definition for that, and it's called racism.”1

  • Backed by an indicted liberal group

Endorsed by the SPLC Action Fund, the political arm of the liberal Southern Poverty Law Center. The SPLC is under federal indictment: in April 2026 a grand jury charged it with 11 counts, including wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering, alleging it secretly paid at least $3 million to people tied to the Ku Klux Klan and other extremist groups. The SPLC has pleaded not guilty. The same organization put Moms for Liberty, a parents' rights group with a Madison chapter, on its “hate map” alongside the Klan.234

  • “Nonpartisan” from Democratic headquarters

His website says it's “a little ridiculous that sheriffs have to run under a political party.” Meanwhile his campaign sends volunteers out to knock doors from “Madison County Democrats HQ.”56

Crime under the current sheriff

What they say

Says deputies are tied up while “calls are stacking up and response times are increasing.”5

The record

The numbers say otherwise. Comparing 2023 to 2025, offenses reported to the Madison County Sheriff's Office fell across the board: violent crime down 23% (377 to 290), burglary down 53% (393 to 186), robbery down 46% (26 to 14), homicide down from 7 to 5, theft down 15%. The office grew from 138 to 219 deputies and from 8 to 26 school resource officers.78

Immigration

What they say

“The Madison County Sheriff's Office is not a federal immigration agency.” He says deputies shouldn't spend time “acting like federal immigration agents” and will cooperate with federal agencies only “when required.”5

The record

Across Alabama, law enforcement is moving the other way. Dozens of Alabama agencies have signed 287(g) agreements to work with ICE, and in July 2026 the Alabama Department of Corrections became the first state agency to join. Jones is promising to do the bare minimum.91011

  • Funded through ActBlue

Brett Jones raises campaign money through ActBlue, the Democratic Party's fundraising platform. ActBlue is under investigation by three U.S. House committees, whose chairmen said in April 2026 that it “deliberately obstructed” their probe into whether illicit and foreign donations got through its system. In 2025 the President also ordered a Justice Department investigation. ActBlue denies wrongdoing.121314
